Documentary production built for expeditions, destinations and real stakes

Blazing Sand Studios produces documentaries that earn their screen time — expedition features, destination series and branded documentaries for broadcasters, streaming platforms and tourism partners. We are Abu Dhabi-registered with the Creative Media Authority as GID Global Media Production, with studios at twofour54 Yas Creative Hub and in Business Bay, Dubai. Paris Norriss, CEO of Blazing Sand Studios, has spent 17 years filming across the Gulf and beyond; the company's documentary work sits beside adventure television titles already distributed in 123 countries, including Guy in Dubai and Guy in the Sky, and the full feature documentary 39 Days to Paradise.

Why documentary, not just "content"

A documentary has to hold an audience without manufactured drama. That means access, trust, safety planning and an editorial spine that survives the edit suite. Our crews shoot on land, in the air and underwater. We plan risk assessments for heat, water, altitude and remote logistics the same way we plan shot lists. Clients come to us when the story is real — a Pacific crossing, a country's living culture, an expedition that cannot be restaged in a studio — and when the deliverables must pass broadcaster and platform QC.

Signature documentary and adventure titles

  • 39 Days to Paradise. A full feature documentary of the 2023 Pacific row with Brothers N Oars — not a trailer. The expedition raised more than £150,000 for marine conservation and became a finished film audiences can watch in full (YouTube id 37qLIKebjY0). See the 39 Days case study.
  • Guy in the Sky. Destination adventure series discovering the essence of countries through sequences of real experiences — Ireland, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Malta and more — filmed for broadcast and platform windows. See the Guy in the Sky case study.
  • Guy in Dubai. Four seasons, 26 episodes and 600 minutes on air for Dubai Television, blending adventure storytelling with destination access that tourism and culture partners recognise.

These titles are why commissioners trust us with long-form factual work rather than only short-form social packages.

What we produce

  • Feature documentaries. Single films with a clear narrative arc, from development through picture lock and delivery masters.
  • Documentary series. Episode maps, recurring characters or locations, and seasonal planning for broadcasters and streamers.
  • Expedition films. Remote and high-stakes shoots where safety, insurance and logistics are as important as the camera package.
  • Destination documentaries. Culture, heritage and place-based storytelling for tourism boards, destinations and airlines.
  • Hybrid docs. Live-action documentary spines with AI-assisted worlds, reconstructions or graphics where the brief needs them — always labelled and rights-documented.

How a documentary commission typically runs

  1. Development. Treatment, access plan, episode or act structure, and a realistic budget path.
  2. Permissions and fixing. CMA pathways in the UAE, location access, and international partnerships where the story travels. Our film fixing team handles permits, crew and kit when productions shoot in the Emirates.
  3. Production. Multi-camera, aerial and underwater capability matched to the story — not kit for its own sake.
  4. Post. Editorial storytelling, sound design, colour and finishing for broadcast, streaming and airline specs.
  5. Distribution support. Deliverables planned early for TV, platforms, airlines and social cut-downs across our 123-country distribution network. See distribution.

Who commissions documentary with us

Broadcasters and platforms (our work has reached Amazon Prime, Apple TV and OSN among verified broadcasters and platforms), tourism boards and destination authorities, airlines needing long-form destination stories, brands funding documentary-style entertainment, and international producers who need a CMA-registered UAE partner. Verified clients across the wider company include Rebel Entertainment, Tadbeer and Rotana Hotels; airline partners include British Airways, Emirates, flydubai, Air Arabia, Etihad Airways, Aer Lingus, SpiceJet, Iberia and LEVEL.

Craft standards that keep docs honest

We do not invent access we do not have. Saudi Arabia filming for AlUla work is attributed to the Royal Commission for AlUla where relevant. Episode detail for Guy in the Sky follows verified sequences — camel racing and Hegra in Saudi Arabia, bog diving and Titanic Belfast in Ireland, and the other country beats Paris has confirmed — rather than generic "adventure montage" language. That discipline protects commissioners as much as it protects our reputation.

From treatment to TX

Documentary budgets fail when deliverables are left to the end. We budget for TX masters, platform files, airline cuts, stills and social trailers during development. Captions, timing and versioning are planned as part of the editorial process. Whether you are greenlighting a feature, a short series or a destination documentary for a tourism window, the same spine applies: clear development, disciplined access, ambitious filming and finish that survives real QC.

Preparing a documentary development brief

A useful documentary brief begins with the central question, not a shopping list of dramatic shots. What will the audience discover, whose experience carries that discovery, and what access makes the story possible? Distinguish confirmed contributors from people you hope to interview. Note any archive material, diaries, photographs or recordings that could support the narrative, together with who controls permission to use them.

For expedition documentaries, describe the editorial fallback if weather, safety or access changes the plan. An honest film can include uncertainty; it should not depend on a dangerous moment happening for the cameras. Consider how participants can record reflections when a full crew cannot accompany them, and how those recordings will be logged and backed up. These are development questions to resolve before selecting equipment or setting a shoot schedule.

Commissioners should also separate editorial approval from factual review. A contributor may be able to check a technical explanation without having approval over the entire film. Agree those boundaries and the handling of sensitive material in writing. Finally, list the intended delivery versions: a feature, episodes, a trailer and short supporting extracts have different structural needs. Planning them together helps preserve the main film's narrative rather than leaving the edit to solve competing briefs after filming ends.

FAQ

Do you produce feature documentaries or only series?

Both. Our slate includes the full feature documentary 39 Days to Paradise and series work such as Guy in Dubai and Guy in the Sky.

Is 39 Days to Paradise a trailer or a full film?

It is a full feature documentary of the 2023 Pacific row, available to watch in full.

Can you shoot documentaries outside the UAE?

Yes. We produce internationally and provide UAE film fixing when productions need a CMA-registered local partner in the Emirates.

Which broadcasters and platforms have carried your work?

Verified broadcasters and platforms include Amazon Prime, Apple TV and OSN, alongside Dubai Television and airline windows across our distribution network.

Do you handle post production in-house?

Yes. Edit, sound, colour and deliverables sit with our post team so picture lock does not mean starting over with a stranger.
